United States Secret Service

A law enforcement division of the Deptartment of the Treasury. It was established in 1865 to investigate and prevent counterfeiting of currency. The Secret Service enforces Federal laws relating to coins, obligations, and the securities of the United States and foreign governments. After the assassination of President William McKinley in 1901, the force was charged with protecting the President . This protection was later extended to the members of the immediate family of the President, Vice President , the President-elect, the Vice President-elect, major presidential and vice presidential candidates, former Presidents and their spouses, widows of former Presidents until their death or remarriage, minor children of a former President until they reach age 16, and visiting heads of state. Brian L. Stafford

Brian L. Stafford was appointed as the 20th Director of the United States Secret Service on March 4, 1999. In his previous assignments, he served as Assistant Director, Office of Protective Operations, and as the Special Agent in Charge of the agency's Presidential Protective Division.

Prior to joining the Secret Service, Mr. Stafford served in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971 and completed a tour of duty in Vietnam .

Mr. Stafford began his tenure with the Secret Service in 1971 as a special agent assigned to the Cleveland Field Office. Subsequent career assignments include duty in the West Palm Beach Resident Office and the Presidential Protective Division. Within the organization's managerial ranks, Mr. Stafford has held several key positions in the Special Investigations and Security Division, the Technical Security Division, the Miami Field Office, and the Office of Protective Operations.

He earned a bachelor of arts degree in economics/business and is married with two children.

Director Brian L. Stafford has received numerous achievement and performance awards throughout his distinguished law enforcement career.
